Green Living & What It Is All About

At the Islington Company (TIC) we care about our environment and the community we live in. Green spaces make up an important part of the identity of Islington as a residential and lively neighbourhood. As a letting and estate agency we help people to discover the splendour of this beautiful area. The parks, quiet squares and hidden nature hideaways, such as Camley Street Natural Park, give residents an opportunity to enjoy the wildlife and relax in this bustling city. It is proven to better the quality of life.

The type of work we do means that we get to interact with numerous homeowners and businesses, this allows us to act as innovators in the area of slowing the effects of cimate change. By raising awareness about carbon emitted from the housing sector, we aim to inspire others to take steps towards reducing their carbon footprint.

Why homes?

Properties are the biggest emitters of carbon emissions. The average newly built 2 bedroom house emits 80 tonnes of CO2 a year. Homes are one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases. This is due to the amount of fuel used to power our property combined with the waste produced by each individual. The carbon footprint we accumulate from our homes usually surpasses that of transport. As an estate agency we are aware of the issues surrounding carbon emissions stemming from property and would like to encourage a culture of corporate responsibility. By planting a tree for every property we let, we want to raise awareness of sustainable incentives for both homes and businesses.

Tree facts: did you know?

There are many positive effects planting new trees can have on our environment. Trees can act as a step towards addressing the climate change crisis, having an effect on greenhouse gas emissions, temperature and soil erosion. By increasing the amount of trees we can improve air quality but they can also help to cut energy consumption. Two mature trees provide enough oxygen for a family of four and one acre of trees removes 2.6 tons of CO2 per year. They renew our air supply by absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. Well placed trees even help to cut energy costs and consumption by decreasing air conditioning costs 10-50% & reducing heating costs as much as 4-22%.

A tree for every let & sale!

At TIC we pledge to plant a tree every time we let a property. In conjunction with OxTreeGreen we will present each landlord with a certificate to celebrate the planting of a new tree. OxTreeGreen provides businesses and individuals with a way to reduce their carbon emissions. Their local UK based tree planting projects, give businesses an opportunity to move towards a greener economy. All of OxTreeGreen’s sites are carefully selected and are not suitable for arable or livestock production, thus they maintain the land available to provide food for us in the future.
